Indigestion, reflux, heartburn, bloating, burping, excess flatulence and irregular or ill-formed stools are all symptoms of gastrointestinal dysfunction.
Usually, the cause comes down to one or more of these things:
Insufficient gastric acid in the stomach - common in vegans, vegetarians and people who don’t eat enough protein. Also common in long term Nexium use.
Insufficient digestive secretions in the upper intestinal tract (bile, pancreatic enzymes, sodium bicarbonate), resulting in over-fermentation of food, bloating, distension and gas production.
Imbalanced gut microbiome, resulting in deficiency of beneficial bacteria to help breakdown the macro to micro nutrients. This can occur due to antibiotic use, candida overgrowth, too acidic gut environment, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and parasites.
Decreased gastric emptying time; drinking too much fluid with a meal slows down digestion in the stomach, causing reflux and heartburn when the stomach contents come back up into the oesophagus.
Decreased intestinal transit time; stimulants such as caffeine quicken peristaltic action of the intestinal tract, reducing absorption of nutrients and water, causing loose stools. Stress can also raise cortisol which compromises digestion.
Intolerance or allergy to certain foods; genetic or acquired, food intolerances and allergies cause indigestion and immune-mediated inflammation.
Having poor digestive power can really impact quality life.Low energy (you’re not absorbing your nutrients, you’re feeling heavy and sluggish)
Physical discomfort
Disruption to sleep
Lack of enjoyment of food
Low mood (studies show that we derive dopamine from enjoying food, and also that 40% of serotonin is manufactured by gut bacteria!)
Problems with elimination (irregular bowel motions, toxic build up, may impact liver and skin in chronic cases).
Weight gain and bloating
How can we fix it?
By looking at the collection of symptoms that you’ve got, your eating habits and recent medical history, we can identify where the seat of the problem lies.
We can do some investigations to find out the state of the GIT, such as
- Comprehensive digestive stool analysis
- H.pylori test
- PCR test
We can work with specific probiotic therapy, diet, anti-microbials, natural digestive stimulants and/or carminatives, nutrients to support gastric acid supply and more to sort out the issues in your GIT.
If you’re experiencing chronic or recurring issues and you know your digestion isn’t happy, reach out for support.
