Genetic testing for health

In Science, the field of epigenetics now recognizes that environment and lifestyle choices influence genetic expression. This opens the door wide for a proactive holistic approach to health, especially when we can find out what our personal genes need to stay in their optimal state!

This is useful for anyone, but especially at these stages of life:

  • Pre-teen - before and during major growth spurts, to support optimal metabolism and avoid inherited hormonal issues such as endometriosis, PCOS etc (esp. in girls);

  • Pre-conception - to optimise methylation for DNA selection (try not to pass on the dodgy genes ;) ;

  • Post-40yo - to tactically safeguard against potentially inherited diseases and health conditions and optimise quality of life in longevity;

  • In any chronic health condition or one that is not responding to commonly recommended treatments from either GPs or alternative therapies.

With a simple swab of your inner gum lining, you can find out incredibly useful information such as:

  • What are your likely food intolerances? In other words, what has your ancestral gene pool become adapted to eating? Do you have hunter-gatherer genes that do better on meat and veg or are do you have farmer genes that can handle more carbs, grains and dairy?

  • Are you particularly sensitive to caffeine, stress, histamines, certain drugs or heavy metals? If so, how can you counteract this?

  • How well do you detoxify? Poor detoxification can come from genetic snips in codes for enzymes such as MTHFR and COMT. These alone can be behind a host of health issues; from ADHD, anxiety and depression, to hormone dysregulation and cancer.

  • What are the genetic flaws in your DNA that may be responsible for some of your family’s inherited health traits? Understanding where SNP’s occur is empowering and useful; you then have a chance to influence your own genetic environment to potentially avoid familial health traps! In some cases, you can discover an explanation for chronic illness that fails to respond to conventional treatments.

  • What nutrient profile does your body crave based on your genotype? For example, hunter gatherers have a higher requirement for choline and B12 in their diet which is protective for the nervous system. If you run at a chronic deficiency over the course of your life, this can predispose you to certain types of illness.

  • How can you support your personal gene code for your best long term health? Based on your genetic information, you can learn what to avoid, what to include more of in your diet and how to optimise your health with specific nutrients to support weak areas.

  • How well is your body performing DNA protection and repair? Understanding what areas of your gene code are chronically failing you can give you the keys to avoiding chronic illness.

  • How your hormones are metabolising and the impact or potential impact on fertility, menstruation, circadian rhythm, immune health and more.

A DNA report can explain so much about your predispositions in health and illness, providing a roadmap of strengths and weaknesses that can be harnessed to your advantage especially in combination with naturopathic guidance.
